Halloween Help!

So I am entering my dogs in a Halloween costume contest. And the first place price is a gift certificate to a pet store. I REALLY want to win, because they have a special bed available at that store--for my Francis and his poor abused bones.

So, any ideas for costumes for a scarred up, crop-eared red pitbull, and an unruly basset hound?

The costumes don't necessarily have to go together; I am entering them separately. But if they do, that's fine. I don't really want to do anything bloody or horrific...more on the lines of adorable or very novel. It doesn't matter if its a hard costume to make; I like to get creative anyway. I just need some ideas!!!

I am going to be a vet in a few months.
I love pit bulls; even though they get blamed for a lot of bad, they can be the sweetest dogs. I also love greyhounds and will be rescuing one soon.
I love to do all types of artwork in any media available to me. (Which on a student income is pretty much pencil and paper...!)
I admire the lost art of traditional media. Its become such a digital world, and we are losing something beautiful.
